Cusco is one of those destinations your children won’t forget: family trips to Cusco are definitely a wonderful adventure with the best company. Cusco City and the Sacred Valley of the Incas are the perfect place to travel with children where you will find activities for all kind of families! So don’t keep thinking about it and bring your children to Cusco to have the best travel experience ever. It will be fun!
In RESPONS we recommend to start the trip with a visit to the Sacred Valley of the Incas due to its lower altitude for a better acclimatization. The kids will love to see the huge snow capped mountains and the big fields on the road to Urubamba, the main town of the valley. An ideal place to stay one or two nights is Ollantaytambo, the only Inca living town that is left in the country. It’s archaeological site will leave you breathless and you’ll love to take a walk through its ancient streets. For your older children, there are tours such as horseback riding, biking, quad biking, or even rock climbing at the Via Ferrata. At night, you can visit the Chocomuseo or chocolate museum, where you will find things you wouldn’t imagine made out of chocolate and even take some baking lessons! On the next day you can take a tour to Machu Picchu and then go back to Cusco City across the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
On the way to Cusco city you can visit Maras and Moray, two places that will definitely surprise you all. Maras is well known for its salt ponds, which are in use since Inca times, whilst Moray is a huge system of circular terraces used by the Incas as an agricultural laboratory. Back to the road you will get to Chinchero, with its vast fields and the snow capped mountains of the Urubamba and Vilcabamba ranges where weaver communities live. There you can learn the weaving process and see how they use a small bag known as ‘cochinilla’ to produce different colors. The archaeological site of Chinchero is simply spectacular, even more at sunset when it turns all orange: you can’t miss it!
In RESPONS we always recommend a visit to a local community and Ccorccor is one of our favourites community tourism destinations. The kids will learn from an andean culture and will experience the different realities getting involved with the local people’s daily life. They will also learn how they work the agricultural fields, how they raise animals suchs as llamas and alpacas and much more. This are these kind of RESPONS activities that we like the most, because our purpose is always to leave a positive impact at the destination in our travel programs, improving the local people’s life quality and taking care of the environment. There are also local homestays with private gardens where you and your family can stay to have a complete experience in a local community: it’s a wonderful experience to strengthen the children’s values.
At Cusco city there is also a lot to do with the family. There you will find the Sacsayhuamán fortress with its gigantic stones that will leave the children breathless. You can get here taking the city tram at the main square, an interesting way to go up to this archeological site. The city center is a great place to walk and see the colonial buildings constructed over the ancient Inca capital. The Qoriqancha temple is one of the most interesting buildings of the city, where you will recognize the spanish building over the most important Inca temple of Cusco: The Temple of the Sun. What about some sweets then? You can eat some playing in a place full of toys at Yanapay, which is a children village where your youngest children can have some fun while helping a good cause. In Cusco city there is also a Chocomuseo, where you can go to eat a lot of chocolate and learn how to prepare it, too. Finally, if you want to end your day at an exclusive but RESPONSible restaurant, we recommend you Calle del Medio Restaurante – Bar, a place with extraordinary dishes and drinks inspired in local products which are bought from local producers. There you will probably meet Carlos, who will kindly explain the concept that he created for the restaurant. This is a perfect place to end a wonderful family trip to Cusco.
